Charles (Tiny) Carson, of Columbia, died August 4, 2009. A memorial service for Charles Adams “Tiny” Carson, 83, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road in Columbia. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. A brief interment service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 9 in Leesville Cemetery beside the Wittenberg Lutheran Church, 233 North Lee St. Mr. Carson, husband of Nancy Barr Carson, to whom he was married almost 59 years, died Tuesday, August 4 after a long illness. Born October 15, 1925, in Florence, he was a son of the late William Roswell Carson, Sr., and Elise Mathews Carson. He lived in Batesburg until his graduation from Batesburg-Leesville High School in 1943. He attended Duke University and Presbyterian College and was a graduate of The Citadel, Class of 1950, earning a B.S. degree in Commerce. Mr. Carson was associated with Southeastern Concrete Products Company, which was organized by his father in 1945, and he served the company as secretary-treasurer, vice president, president and chairman over a period of 56 years. He was very active in business-related associations, holding many offices and promoting the concrete products industry. He was instrumental in forming the S.C. Concrete Masonry Association, of which he was a director and elected president several times. When this association merged with the North Carolina association to form the Carolinas Concrete Masonry Association, Mr. Carson served as a director and was made an honorary lifetime member of CCMA. Also, he was instrumental in forming the S.C. Concrete Pipe Association, which he served as president. Later, he was named an honorary member of the expanded Carolinas Concrete Pipe and Products Association. Mr. Carson served in the U.S. Army as a field artillery officer during the Korean conflict in 1952 and 1953. Upon leaving the Army in 1953, he rejoined Southeastern Concrete Products Company and lived in Columbia until his death. Mr. Carson was a longtime member (since 1953) of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and children’s Sunday school teacher. He was a member of Forest Lake Country Club and the Caprician Dance Club. “Tiny” was known and loved for his personal warmth and friendliness, and for his unflagging devotion to friends and family – especially his three grandchildren. He lived a full and satisfying life, enjoying many pastimes and pleasures. He relished time spent outdoors and was an avid bird hunter. Surviving are his wife; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Adams Carson, Jr., and Sidney Summers Carson of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Barr Carson and Dr. Christopher W. Groner of Elkin, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Frances Carson Faust and Colie Blease Faust, Jr. of Columbia; sister, Elise “Sissy” Carson Bagnal and brother-in-law, Thomas N. Bagnal, Sr. of Columbia; brother, William Roswell Carson, Jr. and sister-in-law, Carolyn Barr Carson of Leesville; grandson, Ross Charles Carson-Groner; granddaughter, Katherine “Kate” Carson-Groner and grandson-in-law, Michael Lippert; grandson, Charles Barr Carson; nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the constancy of friends and for the kindness shown by many caregivers, including the Presbyterian Home Healthcare staff in recent months, during Tiny’s lengthy illness. The love and patience of Juanita Carter and Phyllis Kinman are especially appreciated.
