Cecil W. Phillips, Jr., of Columbia, died Sept. 30, 2020. Born in Bennettsville, SC, he moved to Winnsboro as a boy and spent his youth there. Graduating from Mt. Zion High School, he worked driving the school bus as a teenager. He worked as a counselor at the YMCA Camp Skyuka in North Carolina during his summers. After graduating high school, he moved to Charleston and attended The Citadel where some of his best memories were made. After graduating from The Citadel, he travelled to Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas to train in the Air Force reserves, eventually returning to South Carolina where he married and had a daughter. In the 1980’s he served and dedicated many years of his life to counseling drug and alcohol abuse patients. He was a wise counselor and liked helping others better themselves, giving sound advice and heartfelt words to live by. Later he worked as an insurance agent in Columbia before retiring. He was an avid reader, enjoyed fishing, and had a natural talent for wood-working. He loved USC football and women’s basketball and never missed a game-even if he had to record it for watching at a later time. His sense of humor, his ability to tell funny stories from his life, and his keeping of peppermints in his truck just for his grandchildren are but just a few of the endearing qualities and memories his family will never forget. He is survived by his sister, Susan P. McManus, her husband Bennie of Winnsboro, and their three adult children, Hope, Joette and Holly; daughter Christine P. Lewis of Columbia; grandson Donald Eric Lewis Jr. of Columbia; granddaughter Sarah McKenzie Lewis of Greenville, and granddaughter Emily Christine Lewis also of Greenville. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend to many. He will be loved and missed every day. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com .
