C. Laney Talbert, Jr., 83, of Columbia, died Monday, March 18, 2013. Born in Richland County, April 16, 1929, he was a son of the late C. Laney Talbert, Sr. and Mary Power Talbert. A US Army veteran of the Korean War, Laney was a graduate of The Citadel, class of 1951 and the FBI National Academy. He retired from SLED after 35 years of service, having worked in undercover and criminal investigations. While at SLED, Laney authored “The SC Private Security Officer’s Training Manual” and taught the Private Security Officer’s Training School at SLED and the SC Criminal Justice Academy. He was a firearms instructor for the SC Police Academy, a member of the FBI National Academy Possible Club, and a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor “Ellie” Bouknight Talbert; son, Charles “Chuck” L. (Diane) Talbert, III of Spartanburg, Joel P. (Margaret) Talbert of Fair Hope, AL; grandchildren, Dalton Talbert of Charlotte, Laney Talbert of Charleston and Kristen Talbert of Fair Hope, AL; special niece, Molly Chappelle Carter of Belton, SC; special nephew, Derrell Sipes of Irmo; and special friend, Susie Amick of Columbia. In addition to his parents, Laney was preceded in death by a sister, Patsy Yager; and brothers, Thomas Ross Talbert and Stanmore Watson Talbert. The funeral service for Mr. Talbert will be held 3 o’clock, Wednesday, March 20th, at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Rd, Columbia, with The Rev. Ronald “Dee” Vaughn and The Rev. Dr. Fred S. Miller, Jr. officiating. All present and retired SLED personnel and all Laney’s bowling friends are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
