Bill McCall, Jr., a beacon of light and wisdom, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024, in Moncks Corner, SC, at the age of 77. Born on January 5, 1947, in Kingstree, SC, to the late Reverend Bill McCall and Aletha Thomas McCall, Bill was known for his faith-filled spirit, intelligent mind, and passionate heart. He lived a life that was as generous as it was accomplished, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Family was the cornerstone of Bill’s life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Claudette Flood McCall; children Jennifer Hutson and her husband Chad, Bill McCall and his wife Morgan, John McCall and his wife Molly; grandchildren Gus, Jamon, Hank, Grayson, Lila, and soon-to-arrive baby Drayton; one sister, Mary Staley and her husband Charles; many nieces and nephews. He was never happier than when he was surrounded by his family at home, church, or on the farm. The love and guidance he provided his family were the foundations upon which they built their lives.
Bill graduated from Macedonia High School, worked at Lockheed-Martin, and went on to earn a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from The Citadel. This foundation propelled him into a successful 41-year distinguished career at Santee Cooper, retiring as executive vice president and chief operating officer in 2012. He was respected and adored for his professional expertise, innovative thinking, leadership style, mentorship, and simply the way he treated people. His contributions were innumerable, leading the company to dedicate and name its headquarters’ auditorium for him.
Bill’s dedication to his work was matched only by his devotion to his faith and his community. A pillar of the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner, he served as Chairman of Deacons and was involved in numerous initiatives that enriched the spiritual life of his congregation. His commitment to educational excellence was evident through his leadership and service to St. John’s Christian Academy (SJCA), where he served as Chairman of the Board. His leadership and service in the community is unparalleled, having served as Sertoma President; Rotary Club President; Tri-County Alliance President; Charleston Regional Development Alliance Chairman; Berkeley Chamber of Commerce President; American Cancer Society Leadership Councilman; Regional Economic Development Strategic Plan Steering Committee member; South Carolina Chamber of Commerce Legislative Agenda Task Force member; Horry County Beach Councilman; Foundation Board of SJCA Chairman; USC Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Board member; a founder and governing board member of the Energy Authority in Jacksonville, FL; and the fundraising and construction lead of Unity Park in Moncks Corner.
Bill made an impact on everyone he met and everyone he knew. To meet him was to have him pray for you, tell you he loved you, and invite you to church. He lived his life as a testament to the values he held dear. His faith-filled approach to every challenge, his intelligence in the face of complexity, and his gift for uplifting people were the hallmarks of his character. His memory will continue to inspire us, reminding us of the impact one individual can have when they live with conviction and grace.
