Bernhardt Emil Neumann Jr., 80, of Columbia died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Boone Hospital Center. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, with a special prayer service at 7:30 pm. Interment will be Tuesday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Mr. Neumann was born on Oct. 31, 1929, in San Antonio to Bernhardt E. Neumann Sr. and Marie Dawes Neumann. He was raised by his father and stepmother, Myrtle Ratliff Neumann. He was a 1952 graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Upon graduation he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, spending the next seven years in Korea, Hawaii, Lebanon and Germany. He was a member of the 25th Infantry Division, 27th Regiment, G Company. After his military service, he pursued a career in the field of anesthesia, spending many years as a certified registered nurse anesthetist. Mr. Neumann practiced his specialty in Alabama before moving to Missouri and joining the staff of Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital and, after retirement from that hospital, Columbia Regional Hospital. Mr. Neumann thoroughly enjoyed outdoor activities, including golf, hunting and, later in life, fly fishing. On Nov. 10, 1962, he was united in marriage to Mildred Karen Eby Neumann in Mobile, Ala. Three children were born of this union: two sons, Bernhardt Emil Neumann III (Gloria) and Harold Edward Neumann; and one daughter, Cecilia Elizabeth Gehlert. In addition, he is survived by two grandchildren, Zachary and Lauren. Memorials can be made in his honor to Central Missouri Honor Flight, 1400 Forum Blvd., Suite 38, Box 334, Columbia, Mo., 65203.
