SMOAK, JR., Bayfield Entered into eternal rest on the evening of August 23, 2005, Bayfield W. Smoak, Jr., widower of Irene Bryant Smoak. Residence, Mt. Pleasant, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Saturday at ten-thirty o’clock. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. Friends may call at J. Mr. Smoak, Jr. was born September 27, 1925 in Orangeburg, SC, the son of Bayfield Whilden Smoak and Caroline Mahony Smoak Conroy. He was a 1951 graduate of The Citadel and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea. He also served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Smoak was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, The Association of Citadel Men, The Brigadier Club, NARFE, Retired Officers Association, and Washington Light Infantry. He retired from the US Postal Service as a rural carrier. He is survived by two daughters: Pamela G. Borgel of Winchester, VA and Laura G. Steinbach of Baltimore, MD.; two grandchildren: Robert Michael Steinbach, Jr. and Elizabeth Anne Jones; three great grandchildren: Miriam Elizabeth Steinbach, Samuel Joseph Steinbach, Elena Marie Steinbach; one sister: Caroline S. Legare of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one brother: Norwood Ladson Smoak of Charleston, SC. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5 Clifford Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
