Arthur W. Slauer, age 87, of Union City, CA passed away on August 28, 2024 in Fremont, CA.
He was born on September 2, 1936 to Arthur E. And Martha Slauer in Newark, NJ. Art graduated college from the Citadel with a Bachelors degree in Transportation. Art was initially stationed in France where he met his first wife, Suzanne Sekellick Slauer. Art and Suzanne had three children: Arthur Christopher Slauer, Peter John Slauer and Catherine Anne Slauer.
Art served three tours in Vietnam during the 1970’s and worked in the Army Reserve for many years after active duty until he retired from the Army as a Colonel. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, Army Commander Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, 6 O/S bars and the Armed Forces Medal.
In 1972, following a divorce from Suzanne, Art moved to California and married Joyce F. Slauer. They purchased a home in Union City where they would spend 51 years together. In 1975 Art adopted Joyce’s son, Charles.
Following his military career, Art worked for Kaiser Hospital as Director of Security for 13 years until he retired at age 65.
Art followed the NY Giants and L.A Dodgers, he bowled with his Kaiser colleagues, he enjoyed Broadway Theatre and he traveled the world with his wife, Joyce. Later in his life, he joined the gym and established strong bonds with his trainers. His guilty pleasures were Starbucks and Scotch.
Art is survived by his wife, Joyce and his children, Peter Slauer, Cathy Slauer and Charles Slauer; grandchildren, Ryan Slauer, Shelby Slauer, Nathan Slauer and Anika Gerig; great-grandchildren, Levi Slauer and Rivers Slauer; sister, Linda Layer. Art was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Martha Slauer; and son Chris Slauer.
Honoring Art’s wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial service, instead we will honor his memory and reflect on the joy that he brought to the lives of everyone who knew him.
