Maj. Arnold H. (Pruney) Hurd, Jr., USA, Ret., 91, of Savannah, Ga., died Feb. 23, 2010, at Azalealand Nursing Home. He was born June 16, 1918, in Pulaski, Virginia, and had been a resident of Savannah for more than 60 years. Arnold, or “Pruney” as he was known by everyone, was a graduate of the Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and was a veteran of World War II serving in Europe and Korea. He received numerous awards for his service prior to retirement in 1963 including the Purple Heart. He served as a Military Instructor in the Savannah High School R.O.T.C. unit during his active duty in the late 1940’s. He has been active in community affairs having served as President of the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame; Captain of the Savannah Quarterback Club; volunteer with Benedictine (where he received the Benedictine Medal of Excellence); and membership in national and local military organizations. Arnold is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Yancey Hurd of Savannah; one son , Arnold H. Hurd, III and wife Carol of Marietta, GA; one grandson, Richard S. Hurd of Memphis, TN. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Hurd Gordon. A Graveside Service will be conducted by Dr. B. Earl Best, at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 26, 2010, in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
