Allen Carlton Clark, 80, died from complications related to surgery on April 1, 2009. He was the son of the late John F. Clark and Dorothy Jones Clark. Allen graduated from Bristol Virginia High School in 1945. He attended The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina and graduated with honors and outstanding status. At the Citadel he was Regimental Supply Officer for the Corps of Cadets and a member of the Summerall Guard. He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve with the rank of Major. Allen was a member and an Elder of Glade Spring Presbyterian Church. In business, Allen was the president of the Dixie Coca-Cola Bottling Works, the Canada Dry Bottling Co. and Clark Oil Co., all of which were founded and owned by his family for many years. Very active in business-related associations, Allen held several offices in both Tennessee and Virginia, including president of both state bottling associations. Allen was involved in numerous civic activities. He was a member of the board of directors of the Bristol YMCA since 1970, served as the treasurer for many years and received the YMCA Man of the Year award in 1980. Allen was a member of the Bristol Jaycees and Kiwanis Club since 1950. During membership in Kiwanis, Allen served on the board of directors many times. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Bristol and served on the board of directors several years. Allen was a member of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and served on the Industrial Development Authority for 16 years. He served on the board of directors of First American Bank and was active in the Sequoia Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Clark Thomas. Allen is survived by his wife, Sue G. Clark; six children, their spouses and children, and two great-grandchildren; Donna Clark Scalf, husband Ron, son, Zachary and daughter, Rachel of Atlanta, Ga., David Clark, wife Teresa, and daughters, Meredith and Madeleine of Great Falls, Va., Linda Clark Esser and husband, Fred, and daughter, Heather of Bristol Tennessee, Greg Clark, wife Cindy, son, Brendan and daughter, Megan of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Herbert Clark, wife, Annette, and daughter, Katie of Bristol Virginia, and Bradford Clark, wife, Kim, their son, Allen and daughter, Shelley of Cornelius, N.C.; nephews Paul Thomas of Bristol Virginia and Clark Thomas of Dallas, Texas; aunt Mrs. H.L. “”Buddy”” Jones; and mother-in-law Janie Booher. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 o’clock Monday morning, April 6, 2009, in the Memorial Chapel at Emory and Henry College, with the Rev. Tim Bird, pastor of Glade Spring Presbyterian Church, officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service. Burial will be private. Pallbearers will be Clark Thomas, Paul Thomas, Chris Barker, Mike Brillhart, Rick Humphreys and Marty Large. The body is at Blevins Funeral Home in Bristol, Virginia, where friends may call at anytime. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church Building Fund; or to the Bristol YMCA.
