Albert R. Weldon, known as “Skip,” of West Haven, Conn., passed away on August 21, 2023, surrounded by his family and in the compassionate care of staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The cause was complications following brain surgery due to a fall.
Skip was born May 25, 1939 in Port Chester, New York. His father, a career naval officer, gave him the nautical nickname “Skipper,” later shortened to “Skip,” because there were two other Alberts in the family. As a child, he moved frequently because of his father’s assignments and lived in many locations near US Navy bases.
Skip attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. and The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration. After college, he moved to New Haven, Connecticut to work in a large auditing firm, and, in 1968, he became a Certified Public Accountant. For the last 30 years of his career, Skip enjoyed positions at Yale University in auditing and business management
He married his first wife, Mary Anne, in 1965. They had two daughters, Sandra and Susan. Skip’s first marriage ended in divorce in 1978. He and his wife, Nancy Brown, met at a self-help group meeting in 1982, and they were together at his passing. He considered Nancy’s two children from her previous marriage to be his own.
In retirement, Skip and Nancy spent winters in San Pancho, Nayarit, a coastal village near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where they built a home. Each morning he walked to the San Pancho beach or visited a friend, and on Mondays he played poker with a group of buddies. He and Nancy had fun learning about the Mexican culture and taking trips to seek out folk art.
Skip loved being a husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather. He showed up happily for every graduation, band concert, dance recital, wrestling match, choir performance, and family celebration. One of his great pleasures was cooking for family events, and he was good at it. A loyal and kind friend, he was devoted to the members of his self-help group, as they were to him.
Skip is survived by his wife, Nancy Brown; his daughter Sandra Germain, son-in-law Eric Germain and granddaughters Mackenzie and Madison Germain; stepdaughter Elizabeth Yorulmaz, son-in-law Osman Yorulmaz, and grandchildren Alev and Zachary Yorulmaz; stepson Ian Brown and grandchildren Oscar and Miranda Brown. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, and his daughter, Susan.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 23rd at 10:30 a.m. at the Unitarian Society of New Haven, 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden, CT. A reception will follow in the USNH Social Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made online to Skip’s favorite charity, Entreamigos, a nonprofit community organization that provides educational opportunities to the children and adults of San Pancho, Nayarit, Mexico ( entreamigos.org.mx ). Entreamigos is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization in the US and donations are tax deductible.
Skip’s family and friends are grateful to have had him in their lives. He lives on in their memories and in their hearts.
