Albert Preston “Al” Spears, 91, of Huntsville, Ala., passed away at home Thursday morning, June 18, 2015, surrounded by family. Born in Kershaw County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late John and Nannie Rabon Spears. Mr. Spears was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Europe and the Pacific during World War II and was a veteran student at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1954. Mr. Spears retired from NASA in 1973. He was a former longtime member of First Baptist Church of Madison and a member of Greenlawn Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Spears survived his wife of 57 years, Virginia Chatham Spears, and went on to survive his wife of 11 years, Ruby Green Spears. He was predeceased by his brother, James H. “Jack” Spears, and his brother, Benjamin F. “Ben” Spears. He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Robinson (Tom) of Camden, SC; his son, Preston Spears (Cindy) of Woodstock, GA; his daughter, Lavada Person (Fred) of Huntsville; and his daughter, Gayle Ellis (Kelly) of Huntsville. He is survived by 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Richard Green (Linda) of Columbia, SC, and their family. Visitation will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, Huntsville, AL, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2015, and the funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Madison, Madison, AL, at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2015, followed by internment at Huntsville Memory Gardens, Huntsville, AL.
