Albert L. James, Jr., of Darlington, SC, died on May 14, 2016. Born at Palmetto in Darlington County on May 29, 1916, he was the son of Albert L. and Alexina Wilson James. He was a graduate of The Citadel and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the Law School of the University of South Carolina. He was a retired partner in the law firm of Paulling & James. He served as a Special Circuit Court Judge and for twelve years as a member of the South Carolina Board of Bar Examiners. He was an Eagle Scout. In World War II, Mr. James served as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at The Citadel and in the European Theater, where he participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and was awarded the Invasion Arrowhead, five Battle Campaign Stars, the Bronze Star, and the French Croix de Guerre. He held the rank of Major. He was a past President of the Darlington District of Boy Scouts of America, Darlington Kiwanis Club, Darlington Chamber of Commerce, First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Darlington, and Damon Gun Club, and a recipient of the Darlington Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award. He also served on Darlington City Council. Mr. James served as Deacon, Elder, and Clerk of Session of The Darlington Presbyterian Church, Moderator of Pee Dee Presbytery, Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Presbyterian Home of South Carolina. Mr. James is survived by his sons, Albert L. James III, and John Jay James II, his daughter-in-law, Finley Stith James, his grandchildren, Finley Lucas Hardy (Tim), Marion Graham Segars (David), and Albert L. James IV (Harper), and five great grandchildren, Finley Foss Hardy, Annie Alexander James, David McCarver Segars, Eliza Graham Segars, and Albert L. James V. His wife, Marion, died in September of 2000. Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17that The Darlington Presbyterian Church with burial at Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home. The Reverend Kevin Cauley will officiate.
