Colonel Alan Watts Blankenship, United States Army, Retired, Passed away April 8, 2005. Born July 28, 1928, in Charlotte, N.C. He graduated from the Citadel in 1949 and received his commission as officer in the US Army at the same time. During his 25 years proudly serving his country, he rose to the rank of Colonel, much of that overseas in Europe, Korea, and Laos. He twice earned the Army commendation medal, and in 1971 was awarded the USA Legion of Merit. Retirement came in 1974, then he moved to San Antonio, where he enjoyed several positions, including the Arts of San Antonio. Alan is survived by his wife Ida Tyson Blankenship, whom he married in 2000. Also 3 stepsons: James K. Hopkins, of Dallas Keith W. Tyson, of Laurel, MD Sam E. Tyson, Austin, TX. His brother Joe W. Blankenship, Snellville, GA his nephew Joe Blankenship, Jr., Snellville, GA 3 nieces: Karen May of Tallahassee, FL Angela Blankenship of Salem, MA Susan Blankenship of Athens, GA plus 3 great nieces and 3 great nephews. He was preceded in death in 1993 by his first wife, Kay Blankenship. Visitation will be Monday April 11, 2005, 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home on Bandera Road. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday April 12, 2005 at University United Methodist Church, 5084 DeZavala Road. A reception will follow after the church service from 12 Noon to 12:45 P.M. Interment will be at Fort Sam National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
