Alan Russell McDaniel, 75, of Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at his home after an extended illness. Born on January 27, 1939, he was the son of the late Russell Eugene McDaniel and Kathleen Savage McDaniel of Enfield, N.C. He graduated from Enfield High School, attended The Citadel and graduated from the University of Richmond. For six years, he served in the Army Reserves and received the Outstanding NCO Award, whilst serving as Sergeant First Class. Utilizing his degree in Business, he enjoyed a long career in accounting and retired as controller of Virginia Hospital Laundry. Mr. McDaniel was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he served as an usher, deacon and trustee. His love of family, Clan Donald, his alma maters and WWII history complemented his fondness of genealogy, reading and travel. He never met a stranger and will be remembered for his broad smile and quick sense of humor. Mr. McDaniel is survived by his wife, Mary Kathryn Frye McDaniel; daughters, Robin Elizabeth McDaniel Davis and Anne Russell McDaniel Wright (Lewis) of Midlothian, Mary Hunter McDaniel of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and a brother, James William McCollum (Pam) of Coronado, Calif. In addition, he is survived by five grandchildren, Bryan Randolph Kirby, Matthew Alan Davis, Emma Elizabeth Ann Davis, Andrew Russell Wright, Erin Taylor Wright; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Jane Kirby; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 N. 5th St., Richmond, Va., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2014. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Presbyterian Church’s Walk-in Ministry, Richmond Autism Integration Network or Operation Smile.
