Alan Clay Alpert of Greenville, SC, died peacefully of natural causes at 59 in his home on June 24, 2022, ending a long battle with Type 1 diabetes. He was born to Dr. Richard Alpert and the late Margaret Ann Hill Alpert, originally from Sumter, SC.
He is survived by his father, Dr. Richard Alpert, and his wife Linda Alpert of Greenville; his sister Elaine Alpert (Tom Colquitt) of Atlanta, GA, nephew Kaz Alpert Colquitt (Jennie) of St. Petersburg, FL; his brother Richard Alpert Jr., nephews Alex and Michael Alpert of Greer, SC; sister Jessica Morton, (James), niece Catherine Morton, nephews James and William Morton of Greenville; sister Meredith Myers, (Mike), niece Margaret Myers, nephews Robert, William and Henry Myers of Mount Pleasant, SC.
Alan, affectionately known as “Big Al”, attended JL Mann High School and graduated from The Citadel in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
With a strong work ethic and his natural love of people, Alan worked in the restaurant and pharmaceutical industries and started his own commercial landscaping business. He had an affinity for breaking complicated tasks down into their most simple form so they could be done better and more efficiently. After obtaining a postgraduate certification from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, Alan went on to become a successful job scheduler at numerous manufacturing and nuclear power sites around the country.
He loved his friends and ever-present buddy, “Bob Marley”, his loyal Corgi diabetic service dog. As part of Citadel tradition, his ashes will be spread by fellow Citadel graduates in Charleston and his Citadel ring will be donated back to the school in his honor, as part of the Band of
Gold Program is dedicated to a “Long Gold Line” of past, present, and future cadets.
A private Celebration of Life event for the family and Alan’s closest friends will be held on August 27, 2022.
