Perry Gwinn

Obituary: LTC Perry E. Gwinn, Jr., USAR, Ret., of Greenville, died January 3. In 1940 he began work at Mills Mill until called to active duty in the U.S. Army on Armistice Day in 1941. In 1942 his unit was sent to the South Pacific and was active in Bora Bora, New Hebrides, New Georgia, Guadalcanal and New Caledonia. Gwinn finished his service at a group headquarters in New Caledonia and at harbor defenses in Portland, Maine. In 1946 he completed active duty and remained in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Gwinn then rejoined Mills Mill before moving on to Southern Bleachery & Printworks. He later worked for his late wife's father at the Edward McCrady Company and then Carolina Steel Corporation. Gwinn later transferred to Triangle Construction Company, from which he retired in 1984. He was a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church, having served as deacon, elder and treasurer. Gwinn was an active member of The Citadel Alumni Association. He is survived by a daughter, a son and a grandchild.
