Sloan P. Martin, Jr., MD, of Easley, passed away July 26, 2022.
He was born in Anderson, SC, the son of the late Sloan P. Martin, Sr., and Aldene Bowie Martin.
Dr. Martin was a graduate of Boys High School in Anderson, the Citadel and The Medical University of South Carolina. Following an internship at Greenville Memorial Hospital, he completed a one-year residency in general surgery at the Medical University of SC and a three-year residency in general surgery at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He then served in the Army Medical Corp for two years as a general surgeon. His first tour of duty was in Seoul, Korea. His second tour of duty was at Fort Polk, LA. After an honorable discharge from the military, he completed a residency in Thoracic and Cardiac surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. He received certification as a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Upon completing his residency, he moved his family to Greenville, SC and began private practice. Dr. Martin and his associates designed and instituted the first cardiac surgery program at Greenville Memorial Hospital, where the first open heart procedure was performed in February 1976. Dr. Martin served as the Director of the Cardiac Surgery Program. He was in private practice from 1971 to his retirement in 1999.
After his retirement from private practice, he was appointed by the Greenville Hospital System to work in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs at the Greenville Hospital Life Center and Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital focusing on the Lipid Management Program and the Quit Smart Program. During this time, he also led a three-year Duke Endowment Grant studying the delivery of cardiac care to the citizens of Greenville County. Following this position, he worked at the St. Francis Millennium Facility in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit.
Dr. Martin was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and had served as a volunteer in the Stephen Ministry, and previously served on the Executive Board of the Hope Clinic in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Dr. Martin was a Member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the S.C. Medical Association, and the Greenville County Medical Association. He had served on the medical staff at Greenville Memorial Hospital and Bon Secours.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Leola (Ola) Martin, two sons, Sloan P. Martin, III (Denise) and Kevin C. Martin (Robby), two grandchildren, Sloan P. Martin, IV, Anna Katherine Martin and one brother, William B. Martin, MD.

***Sloan’s greatest passion in life was his family. He was known as a quiet man, a good husband, and loving father and grandfather. He will be remembered for his many wood turnings that he generously shared and for his positive attitude and ability to solve problems with a quiet confidence.
A private family service will be held on July 29, 2022 at Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery in Anderson, SC. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
