Harold Gray Sugg, Jr, 76, of Annapolis, Md., husband of F. Hilda Hammond Sugg died peacefully at home on April 30, 2022, from complications due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Harold (Hal) was born May 11, 1945, in Pittsburgh, PA, son of Harold Gray Sugg and Mary Jane Nesbitt Sugg. He graduated from Norfolk Academy (Norfolk, VA) and obtained a B.A. in history from UNC (Chapel Hill, NC). He served 4 years in the US Navy. Upon discharge, he completed a Master’s degree in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Blacksburg). His research was focused on freshwater biology and, in addition to local lakes; he collected data at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. He moved to Charleston, SC to work for Verona, a chemical dyestuffs division of Mobay (eventually bought by Bayer). His professional career in Health and Environmental Safety focused on developing methods to purify post-production dyestuff effluents and help restore local ecological systems. He met his future wife in South Carolina and they married in 1993 and settled in West Ashley. Hal retired from The Bayer Corporation in 2010 and completed a Masters in Teaching from the Citadel. Hal was a true outdoorsman who traveled extensively throughout the US and enjoyed boating, biking, hiking and camping. Hal is survived by his wife of 29 years, multiple siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family would like to express gratitude for the compassionate help and care given by Hospice of the Chesapeake, Pasadena, MD. Funeral arrangements will be managed by the Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy., Pasadena, MD 21122.
