Richard (Dick) S. Blanchard Sr., 86, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and Hendersonville, North Carolina died October 18, 2021 at home surrounded by his immediate family.
Richard was born on Sullivan’s Island July 9, 1935, to the late Daniel Blanchard and Grace Blanchard and grew up on the island.
Richard graduated from Moultrie High School in 1953 and The Citadel in 1957. “Dick” worked in the transportation business both in trucking and steamship lines, retiring from Estes Express Lines in 1997. He was a past president of the Charleston Traffic Club, the National Defense Transportation Association, and Harmon Lodge. He loved his Citadel Bulldogs and attended many games over the years with his wife and family. Formerly, he was an avid golfer and a member of the “Rascals” at Charleston Municipal Golf Course. He was a volunteer coach and a Scoutmaster in his younger years. “Dick” is remembered for loving his family fiercely and for his quick wit. He rarely met a stranger and greeted everyone with a warm smile with his bright blue eyes and a firm handshake.
Richard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Roberta B. Blanchard; two children Rick Blanchard(Laura of Summerville) and Rene’ Severns(Dan of Mt. Pleasant); five grandchildren Kathryn Holley (Ike), Kyle Severns, Stockton Blanchard (Cassidy), Shelby Severns, and Laura Grace Blanchard; one great granddaughter Amelia Holley; two siblings, Elizabeth (Betty) Imsande of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Alfred (Al) Blanchard(Deborah of Birmingham, AL); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by brothers Eugene “Gene” Blanchard and Daniel “Danny” Blanchard.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday November 27, 2021 at Sunrise Presbyterian Church on Sullivan’s Island. Visitation with the family is from 10:00 AM until 10:50 AM. The family invites attendees to wear Citadel blue. An interment service will be held at Carolina Memorial Gardens in North Charleston at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations or honorariums to be made to Charleston Pet Helpers, The Citadel Foundation- Class of ‘57, or Sunrise Presbyterian Church.
