Dr. Allan Preston Bruner, III, 88, of Sumter, widower of Helen Banks Bruner, died Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.
He was born January 26, 1933, in Columbia, SC to Elsie Elaine Coffin Bruner formerly of Prince Edward Island, Canada and Captain Allan Preston Bruner, II of Ft. Motte, SC.
He is survived by his children, Kathryn “Trina” Stone (David) of Arlington, TX, Stephen McKenzie Bruner of St. Matthews and Marian Burns (Charlie) of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Nancy Banks of Lexington; grandchildren, Sarah Bowers (Joel) of Columbia, Allan Stone (Nicole) of Long Beach, CA, Preston Stone (Erin) of Aledo, TX, Rowland Burns (Laura) of Anderson, Kathryn Stone of Arlington, TX, Rebecca Jenkins (Blake) of Birmingham, AL and Banks Burns (Kaylie) of Mt. Pleasant; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his mother, father, wife and son, Allan Preston Bruner, IV.
Allan grew up in Columbia, SC, attended Hand Middle School and Columbia High School through 9th grade. He finished high school at St. Matthews High School in 1950.
He attended college at the Citadel and graduated in 1954. He earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1957.
Allan married Helen Woodside Banks of St. Matthews in 1956. After completing a year long Internship at Columbia Hospital (Columbia, SC) in 1957 they moved to Sumter where he practiced Family Medicine for over 40 years. In addition, to his private practice, Allan was a member of the Medical Staff at Tuomey Hospital.
He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
When off call, Allan enjoyed the outdoors. He and Helen were horse and cattle owners and spent all the time they could at the family farm in Calhoun County. If he was resting, he was reading. He enjoyed all educational material.
The family sends sincere gratitude for the patient and dedicated care of the Morningside staff, the constant cards of encouragement and love from Aldersgate United Methodist Church and many friends.
Private family graveside services will be held at a later date in the West End Cemetery, St. Matthews, SC.
