James Hagood Chaplin “Jim” Lee, 80, of Lexington, SC, passed away on Thursday, July 8. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 24 at 11:00 a.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home – Lexington Chapel, 503 N. Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Thornwell, 302 South Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325.
Jim was born in Florence, SC, son of Dr. and Mrs. David Lamar Lee, Sr. He was a proud 1963 graduate of The Citadel (F-Troop). He served in the U.S. Air Force and later worked as an accountant in several commercial settings over many decades. After he retired, he opened a travel agency to stay close to his passion for exploring new places. Jim loved shag dancing, music of all kinds, barbecue, and boiled peanuts. He had an infectious laugh and was a natural story teller.
Surviving are his son, James Hagood Chaplin “Jimmy” Lee, Jr. (Laura) of Fort Mill, SC, and his daughters, Debra Ann Lee of Jacksonville Beach, FL and Margaret Barnwell Lee Butler (Kevin) of Sandwich, MA; his grandsons Dylan James Lee and Tyler Brandon Lee of Fort Mill, SC; a sister, Emmie Lee “Peachy” Shealy of Columbia, SC; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Mary Lee Houchins Lee, his parents, Dr. David Lamar Lee, Sr. and Emmie Chaplin Lee of Florence, SC; a brother, Dr. David Lamar Lee, Jr. of Florence, SC; a sister, Elizabeth Lee “Betsy” DuRant of Columbia, SC; and a nephew, David Lamar Lee, IV of Charlotte, NC.
