William John Lindberg, of Huntsville, Ala., passed on the morning of July 11, 2021, at the age of 92 at his home in Huntsville, Alabama. Bill was born in New York City in 1928; but grew up along the beautiful coastal region near Beaufort, South Carolina as the son of William and Irene Lindberg. Upon graduating from the Citadel Military College of Charleston in June 1950, he was commissioned as an Army Second Lieutenant and entered combat duty in Korea where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Once state side, Bill attended Purdue University receiving a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering on an army program. In 1954, Bill, with his wife and daughter, moved to Huntsville, Alabama to begin his career at the Missile Laboratory at Redstone Arsenal. In 1962, having left the army to work in Civil Service, he was appointed Director of ARPA Division and was assigned responsibility for management of research in ballistic missile defense. From 1968 to 1985, Bill was director of the Advanced Sensors Directorate in MICOM’s Army Missile Laboratory where he was responsible for technology covering target acquisition, tracking, command, and terminal homing guidance from Army Missile systems. In 1976, Bill received the Huntsville Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Outstanding Engineer of the year award. In 1979, with a ceremony at the Pentagon, he became a charter member of the Senior Executive Service, receiving the Presidential Meritorious Executive Award for sustained superior accomplishment of management programs of the United States Government and for noteworthy achievement of quality and efficiency in the Public Service. As chairman of an army-wide team, Bill reviewed all activities of Smart Munitions within the government and industry. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Margaret Carolyn Combs Lindberg; daughter, Lorri Lindberg Bell and her husband, Barry Bell; his daughter-in-law, Cathy Lindberg; grandchildren, Lauren, Molly, and Leah Lindberg; and brother, Stephen Lindberg. He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Hughston; and his son, Jon Peter Lindberg. Visitation will be from 12:30-2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 15th, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. There will be a private graveside service at Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Huntsville Symphony or the Huntsville Chamber Music Guild.
