Lawrence Wertan, age 77, of Toccoa, Ga., passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Born February 20, 1944 in Charleston, SC, he was the son of the late John Francis Wertan II and the late Erline Eugenia Bennett Wertan. Mr. Wertan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a retired teacher with the Habersham County Georgia School System. Larry graduated from Rivers High School, Baptist College of Charleston (now Charleston Southern University), and he completed graduate school at the Citadel with post graduate work at the University of New York at Buffalo. Larry was a coach, teacher, librarian and writer. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and his students. Family members include his wife, Terry Wertan; daughter, Jackie Wertan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Frances Wertan, Harry Wertan, and Steve Wertan; and a sister, Jean Jakob. The family will receive friends at the mortuary Saturday, June 19, 2021 from 12 pm to the service hour. A service to celebrate Larry’s life will be held at two o’clock Saturday, June 19, 2021 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with Pastor Roland Vega of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Donations can be sent to the American Heart Association.
