Services for Fred Marvin Auld, Jr. will be held Friday, June 4, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. in Boyce Chapel, First Baptist Church, Columbia, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Auld died June 1, 2021. Born in Columbia, March 11, 1941, he was the son of the late Fred, Sr. and Louise Norris Auld. He was a graduate of Brookland Cayce High School, The Citadel, and the University of South Carolina. Upon graduation from The Citadel, he married the love of his life, Bette (Elizabeth Jean Rogerson) and moved to Anderson. He began teaching at McCants Junior High and coaching at Anderson High School, later TL Hanna. He and Bette shared an exceptional marriage of 53 years, until her death in 2018. The couple moved to Columbia in 1969, where Fred began his career at Eau Claire High School. He had a distinguished career as a teacher, coach, and athletics director in Richland County School District One. He retired after 38 years of service in 2003. This service led to his induction into the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Hall of Fame in 2017. Fred was an active member of First Baptist Church, Columbia, and Wampee United Methodist Church, where he and Bette attended while in their beloved Cherry Grove. Fred served many years on the board of deacons at First Baptist and worked with the youth. He taught 11th and 12th grade Sunday School for many years at First Baptist, leading and guiding multiple generations of young people. Fred’s loves were his family, his Irish heritage, sports, The Citadel, and the beach.
Fred is predeceased by his parents, both brothers, Jack Randolph Auld and Ballowe DesPortes “Skip” Auld, and his beloved Bette. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth “Beth” Auld Crolley (Roger) of Cayce, and Fred “Trey” Marvin Auld, III (Annette) of Walhalla, South Carolina; grandchildren, Mary Alex Carter (Brandon), Katie Beth Smith, Dru Auld, Lex Auld, Jackson Thrailkill, and Mary Delle Auld. He is also survived by brother and sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, whom he loved dearly.
The family is grateful to Lily Cox, his bonus “granddaughter” for all of her love and care through the last few years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church or The Citadel Class of 1963 scholarship fund.
