James Kent Van Ness, Jr., of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 8, 2021. A service in celebration of his life will be held in Charleston, SC at a later time.
Jim was born October 9, 1931 in Charleston, son of the late James Kent Van Ness, Sr., and Fannie Lee Everett Van Ness. He graduated from Charleston High School, class of 1950, and The Citadel, class of 1954, where he was a member of the Summerall Guard. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army, serving his country on active duty and as a reserve. He retired as Vice-President and Comptroller at Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company, with 42 years of service.
Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter, member of St. James Episcopal Church and James Island
Yacht Club since 1965. Jim was Treasurer of The Citadel, Class of 1954 Reunion Committee for Included among his many civic activities is the Sertoma Club of
Charleston, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Atlantic Coast Conservation Association, National Wildlife Federation, National Audubon Society, Ducks Unlimited and Quail Unlimited.
Jim was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis Ann Burbage Van Ness, and daughter, Karen Lee Van Ness Rodgers.
He is survived by his son, James Kent Van Ness, III and his wife, Leilany Villanueva Mayo Van Ness; his sister, Martha Catherine Van Ness Alford; four grandchildren: Caroline Lee McCoy, James Otis McCoy and his wife Katey McCoy, Morgan Van Ness McNeill and her husband Charles McNeill and Denise Elizabeth Rodgers; three great-grandchildren: Liam McCoy, Jack McCoy and Carys McCoy.
