Harry Alexander Mullen, Jr. died at his home in Marietta, Georgia, on October 9, 2020, at age 80, surrounded by the love of his life, Pam, and their six children. He was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 20, 1940, to Harry Alexander Mullen and Rubye Melissa Collins Mullen. He was known for his faith in Jesus and his devotion to his family. He leaves a long legacy with his six children and 15 grandchildren, living his love for them and praying that they would find and follow the one he followed.
After graduating from Greenville High School in 1958, Alex attended The Citadel. When at The Citadel, he was in F Company and served in the Summerall Guards. He wore his Citadel ring proudly and was a Life Member of The Citadel Alumni Association . He served two years in the Army at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina where he was the head of the military personnel division. He then met and married Pamela Faye Williams of Columbia, South Carolina on January 25, 1964. On their honeymoon in New York City, Pam was the grand prize winner on The Price is Right and won a European trip that extended the romantic beginning of their love story that was growing to Alex’s last breath.
He began his financial career and received his MBA from Emory University. Soon after, Alex and Pam started their family and were blessed with six children. This would shape their lives. Alex was a baseball coach at NYO; an avid reader who challenged his kids to read; a sideline cheerleader at all of his children’s and grandchildren’s games and musical events; a driving instructor; an airport chauffer; and most important, an encourager who told his kids how proud he was of each one of them.
His faith was the foundation of his love for his family. He was regularly seen in his study reading his Bible and praying – through good times and hard times. He wrote notes of encouragement to his children at college that included bible verses and reminders to get back to church. He and Pam prayed daily for all their six children.
He served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. Later, he joined Peachtree Presbyterian Church where he and Pam took up an aisle sitting with their kids and grandkids in the Sanctuary. At Peachtree, Alex and Pam taught many Sunday School classes passing on their wisdom about praying as couples.
Mr. Mullen is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pam, and their 6 children: Hope Carter (Steve) of Jackson, Mississippi; Marnie Crumpler (Mark) of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Harry (Tripp) Alexander Mullen, III (Tori) of Marietta, Georgia; Holly Pollock (Todd) of Marietta, Georgia; Mandy Thome (Julian) of Sandy Springs, Georgia; and Audra Thompson (Harry) of Marietta, Georgia; and their 15 grandchildren: Maggie Reimherr, Claire Carter, Chip Carter, John Crumpler, Anna Crumpler, Drew Mullen, Hallie Mullen, Eli Mullen, Dylan Pollock, Cameron Pollock, Tove Thome, Collins Thome, Caroline Thome, Hollis Thompson and Harry (Trey) Thompson.
