Herbert Berkowitz, of Jackson, N.J., died March 19. He was born May 2, 1929 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Arthur Berkowitz and Eve Palmer Berkowitz. Herb graduated Linden High School then college at The Citadel. He is an Army Veteran who served in the Korean Conflict. Herbert (Herb) married his wife Roslyn in 1950; they lovingly raised three children, Bobby (Susan), Susan (Davis) and Jill (Forrest). He thoroughly enjoyed being the proud loving Poppy to his grandchildren: Adam (Shari), Rachel (Jesse), Brian (Jamie), Joshua (Erica), Ariel (Chris) & Julia (Andy) and three step grandchildren, Sarah, Morgan and David. He was thrilled meeting his great-grandson Isidore and would have been about his recently born greatgranddaughter Hayden. He is preceded in death by his wife, Roslyn. He was then blessed to have found love with his companion, Judith for the past 18+ years. They have enjoyed a life together after each losing their beloved spouses and she has been at his side in love and support until his death. To all these people, Herb tried to draw them into his passion of “touring” only it was touring the golf courses. His famous roundhouse swing led to 11 Hole-In-Ones while darting around the courses. Gradually his nonstop commentary and cigar smoking rounds became nonsmoking, kind and quiet “just trying to get the ball in the air” rounds at age 90. Herb’s entrepreneurial streak led him to open Community Lumber Company. He also found later success building housing developments in Bricktown, New Jersey. Herb was the strong caretaker patriarch of the family. He has quietly supported people through medical illnesses, while at the same time enjoying an enriched life and could be found dancing at the many happy life celebrations. He was known for his wit and humor and his adept whistling skills. Herb would appreciate the current social distancing and Memorial services to celebrate his life will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made in Herb’s name to the Dementia Society www.dementiasociety.org.
