Arthur LeRoy Murray, Jr., 86, of Greenwood, South Carolina, beloved husband of Anne Trammell Murray, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Born January 17, 1940, in Greenwood, he was the son of the late Arthur LeRoy Murray, Sr. and Nelly Boyd Murray. A lifelong resident of Greenwood, Arthur graduated from Greenwood High School, Class of 1958, and went on to attend The Citadel, graduating with the Class of 1962. Guided by his faith and a strong sense of honor, he soon began a distinguished career in the United States Air Force as an intelligence specialist and served as a Titan Missile crew commander, ending his 20-years of service in 1982 retiring as the rank of Captain.
Following his military service, Arthur continued to serve others through education, working as a Computer Technology instructor at Piedmont Technical College until his retirement. He earned advanced degrees from Troy State University and the University of Arkansas and found great fulfillment in mentoring and teaching his students.
Arthur was a devoted member of South Main Street Baptist Church throughout his life. He faithfully served as a deacon, sang in the church choir, and was an active member of the Adult 6 Sunday School Class. His love of music extended beyond the church, as he also performed with the Greenwood Choral and played in The Citadel Band Company.
A man committed to service in all aspects of life, Arthur was an Eagle Scout and later served as a Scoutmaster in Madrid, Spain-an experience he remembered fondly. He was also an active member of American Legion Post 20 and the Greenwood Lions Club, where he earned numerous awards in recognition of his dedication and leadership.
Above all, Arthur was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
