The family celebrates the life and mourns the death of Beaufort native Guy McSweeney, age 97. Guy passed away on December 1, 2025 at his home in Beaufort, South Carolina.
Guy was born on July 6, 1928 in Bradenton, FL. He is preceded in death by his father Miles Porcher McSweeney, his mother Frances Howell McSweeney and his sister Marion McSweeney Mead.
Guy leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Mary Jane Howard McSweeney (Mimi); three children, Miles Francis McSweeney (Lynn), Brooks McSweeney Thomas (Jim) and Guy Gray McSweeney. Guy and Mary Jane have four grandchildren; Katherine Brooks Hudspeth (Eric), Amelia Gray Louwers (Nick), Annie Gray McSweeney and William Guy McSweeney; three great-grandchildren, Owen Allen Hudspeth, Summer Gray Louwers and Isla Brooks Hudspeth.
Guy graduated from Staunton Military Academy in 1946 and The Citadel in 1950. He then joined the United States Air Force completing 100 missions in F-80s in Korea. Guy left the Air Force as a regular Captain in 1957 and went into the mobile radio business. The family lived in Raleigh, NC, Lexington, KY, Atlanta, GA, and finally moved back to his home of Beaufort in 1985. Guy was active in St Helena’s Parish Church, Rotary, Boy’s Club, and Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club. Not one to keep still, he also enjoyed his book club, breakfast club, Thursday club and morning breakfast meetings downtown.
A memorial service will take place in the Parish Church of St Helena on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 2:30. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
