Clarence A. (Gus) Jeter III, ’62

Clarence Augustus (Gus) Jeter, III, age 77, passed away at his home in Spartanburg, South Carolina on November 14, 2018. Gus, the son of Clarence Augustus (Gus) Jeter Jr. and Margaret Frances (Sis) Roper Jeter Gilliam, was born in Carlisle, South Carolina on December 5, 1940.

Gus was a loving husband, stepfather, brother, and uncle to his family and was a steadfast friend to all who had the pleasure to know him. He was a graduate of the 1958 Union High School class and his beloved Citadel in 1963, where he received a B.A. in Liberal Arts. After college, he served in the U.S. Army and then as a Company Commander for the U.S. Army Reserves in Union, South Carolina. He worked for several years at Milliken & Company in various management roles. In 1971, Gus began working in the investments and brokerage industry and was a Financial Advisor for more than 45 years. He was dedicated to his clients and colleagues throughout his very successful and distinguished career and made a positive impact on many people’s lives.

Gus enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with his family and many friends. He never met a stranger and was a remarkable and caring person. Gus was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Union, South Carolina and served as a member of the Vestry for many years.

Gus will be dearly missed by his life-long friend and loving wife Dr. Margaret Leslie Pierce-Jeter of Spartanburg and stepdaughters Patricia Pierce of Columbia and Virginia Pierce of Ridgeway, two brothers Charles Roper Jeter of Greenville and Dr. Sheldon Moseley Jeter and his wife Jane of Atlanta, nieces Leigh Jeter and her husband Dan Neppl of Chicago and Beth Jeter Hrubala and her husband Mike of Spartanburg, nephews Charles Jeter Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Huntersville and Jeff Jeter of Atlanta, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Gus and Sis, stepdaughter Leslie Pierce, and sister-in-law Helen Jeter.

The family will receive friends and family on Friday, November 16, 2018, from 5-7 PM at the Holcombe Funeral Home in Union, South Carolina.

Funeral services will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Union, South Carolina on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 1 PM. Graveside Services will be held immediately after the funeral at The Jeter Cemetery on Jeter Cemetery Road in Carlisle, South Carolina.

Memorials may be made to The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29409 in Gus Jeter’s memory.
