John Elliott Reeves, of Lugoff, known to all as John, was welcomed into this world on the 11th of June, 1944, in Winston-Salem, NC. He spent the majority of his life in Lugoff, South Carolina. He was a loyal husband, a trusted friend, and a mentor to many. As Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” John found his why in his love for his family, his community, and his commitment to his work.
John graduated from Citadel Class of 1966, a testament to his resilience and determination. His passion for baseball was unparalleled, leading him to visit all 30 major league ball parks in America. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the owner and proprietor of Western Auto in Lugoff for 16 years, where he touched the lives of many in the community. He was a successful salesman, with a career that spanned over many years with Redfearn Motor Company. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, activities that brought him closer to nature and allowed him to appreciate the simple joys of life. John was also a member of the Grace Episcopal Church.
John is survived by his loving wife, Gertrude Duckett “Trudy” Reeves, with whom he spent nearly six decades of an endearing marriage since October 14, 1967; son, William Frank Reeves (Robin) of Lexington; daughter-in-law, Anna Turbeville Reeves of Columbia; and grandchildren, Dalton Reeves, Tripp Reeves, Sawyer Reeves (Allisyn), Janna Reeves, and Ava Reeves. He is preceded in death by his parents, Irene and Oscar Reeves; son, John Elliott “Jay” Reeves, Jr.; and sister, Betty Joe Fultz.
Visitation will be held at Powers Funeral Home, 832 Ridgeway Road, Lugoff, South Carolina, 29078, on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 10:00 am with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 11:00 am at the funeral home.
