Harry Dante Kahn Sr., age 94, and a resident of Pensacola, died March 20, 2018.
Harry, a fourth generation Pensacolian, was born February 3, 1924. He graduated from Pensacola High School, Class of 1941, and then attended The Citadel. While at college, he married Ann Besthoff of Baton Rouge. His college education was interrupted by his service in World War II where he earned the Bronze Star before continuing to complete his degree at The Citadel. After college, Harry returned to Pensacola to enter the family business, The Kahn Company that he led for many years. In 1876, Harry’s great-great grandfather was a founding member of Temple Beth-El, Florida’s first Jewish congregation. Harry was a lifelong, active member, and served in all capacities of the congregation. He was passionate about his Jewish faith and he served on the Board of Directors of Mosaic Jewish History of Florida. Harry edited “A History of Temple Beth-El, 1876-1990.” He was active in the community and many civic and social organizations. He was a founding member of the Fiesta of Five Flags and served on the board for many years. He was recognized as De Luna in 1972. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting with a multitude of friends at Burnt Corn and Hit ‘n Miss hunting clubs. In his spare time, Harry loved teaching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to hunt and fish and often attended their sporting events. Above all his accomplishments, Harry enjoyed and entertained his family and extended family on many occasions. In 1993, Harry married Anita Harrell and they enjoyed 25 years hunting, fishing and travelling together. Anita’s family happily became his family.
Harry is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Ann Kahn in 1987; parents, J.L. “Son” Kahn and Helen Dante Kahn; his brother, Dr. Charles J. Kahn; his cousin, Jack Kugelman, who grew up with him in North Hill, and his best friends, Bill Bond and George Wagenheim.
Harry is survived by his wife Anita; his son, Dante and his wife, Patty Kahn; his daughter, Rosann and her husband, David Mann; his grandchildren, Harry Dante Kahn III, Carol Kahn Rosenblatt and her husband, Brad, Lacey Ann Mann, Kendall Mann Neill and her husband, Terry and Tyler Waite Mann; and his great-grandchildren, Hayden, Baylin, Lauren, Ryan, and Porter; as well as his sister-in-law, Bettie Kahn and many lifelong friends including Jane Kugelman, Amelia Wagenheim and Walter Biggs.
Visitation will be held 2:00pm with a Funeral Service at 3:00pm Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Temple Beth-El Sanctuary with Rabbi Joel Fleekop officiating. Burial will follow at the Temple Beth-El Cemetery.
