George Dennis Sims, 78, of Simpsonville, SC, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in West Point, Georgia on October 1, 1946, Dennis was the eldest son of the late Howard Marshall Sims and Joyce Knowles Pickens (Yancy Elbert Pickens). He was the devoted husband of the late Kay McKenzie Craft Sims, with whom he shared nearly 51 years of marriage.
Dennis is survived by his son, William Richard Sims of Simpsonville; his daughter, Ella McKenzie Sims Barbery (Jay) of Greenville; and was predeceased by his son, Howard Allen Sims. He leaves behind six cherished granddaughters—Cassidy, Kendall, Caroline, McKenzie, Charlotte, and Sally—one great-granddaughter, Autumn; his brother, Paul Howard Sims (Diane); and many beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Anne Sims DeYoung (Ted).
A proud 1968 graduate of The Citadel, Dennis was a member of November Company, where he formed lifelong friendships. Following graduation, he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He later earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina and went on to a distinguished career in law—working in private practice, serving as general counsel for the former American Federal Bank, and concluding his career as an Assistant Solicitor for Greenville County.
An avid outdoorsman, Dennis found joy in hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and trap shooting. In retirement, he could often be found at the Greenville Gun Club, relaxing with a western novel on his Kindle, or cheering on Clemson football. Known for his generous spirit and willingness to help others, Dennis loved his family deeply and unconditionally.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 24, 2025, from 2:00–3:00 p.m. at Pruitt Funeral Home, 603 N. Main Street, Honea Path, SC 29654. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Garden of Memories, Belton Honea Path Hwy, Belton, SC 29627.
