Norwood Ladson Smoak, 83, of Charleston, formerly of Sullivan’s Island, died Monday, May 22, 2017 at a local hospital. The relatives and friends of Norwood L. Norwood was born on January 17, 1934 in Charleston, SC to the late Bayfield Whilden Smoak and the late Caroline M. Smoak. He was a graduate of Moultrie High School. Norwood attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from the College of Charleston, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He attained a MAT from The Citadel and had a long career teaching high school. He spent the majority of his teaching career in Mt. Pleasant, first at Moultrie High School and then at Wando where he retired after a total of forty-one years as an educator. He is survived by his wife, of 57 years, Marie H. Smoak and two daughters, Dr. Caroline S. Keller (Michael Klein) and Lucia S. Boinest (Alex); grandchildren, Caroline Marie Boinest of New York City, Lucy Allan Boinest, Ladson Alexander Boinest, Sarah Caroline Klein, and Benjamin Norwood Klein, all of Charleston.
