Walter Dalton Leonard, Jr. age 87, of Mount Airy, NC, died on March 14, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Mount Airy on April 1, 1929. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Dalton Leonard, Sr. and Alice Harris Leonard. A graduate of Mount Airy High School and Riverside Military Academy, he later attended The Citadel and proudly served our county in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following the illness and death of his mother, he took over the family business, Leonard’s Jewelry, which has long been an icon on Main Street. He was proud to own and operate the oldest business in Mount Airy and Surry County. He is survived by five children, Ann Taylor Leonard, his devoted daughter and caregiver and his granddog, Charlie of Mount Airy; Kathy Jones and Walter D. Leonard, III of Mount Airy; Alice Isom of Galax, VA, and Amy Deaton of State Road. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, at Moody Funeral Home by Rev. Mark Muckler. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Pilot Mountain Post 9436 & Mt. Airy Post 2019.
