Dr. Jack W Chandler, Jr., 86, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017. Born in Sumter, SC, he was the son of the late Jack W and Mary Thorne Chandler. Educated in Sumter public schools, he graduated from The Citadel and The Medical University of South Carolina. His senior year in high school he was South Carolina’s Shrine Bowl quarterback, and was captain of his state championship basketball team. At The Citadel, he was a cadet leader, an outstanding student, and the football team’s starting quarterback and punter. His classmates voted for him to receive the John O. Willson ring. After earning his MD and serving four years of active duty in the Air Force, he moved his family to Greenville and joined The Children’s Clinic where he practiced pediatrics for 26 years. He completed his medical career as Vice President of Medical Affairs of the Greenville Hospital System, where he was active as an educator and mentor, and where he helped establish The Children’s Hospital. Dr. Chandler was also active in civic affairs, having served on the boards of the Greenville Health Corporation and A Child’s Haven. He was elected by fellow alumni to serve a six year term on The Citadel’s governing Board of Visitors, after serving as president of the Alumni Association. He was a lifelong Methodist and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (Libby) Hamer Chandler; four children: Jack Chandler (Cathy), Mary Beth Farnsworth (Hal), Catherine Byrd (Chris), and Edward Chandler (Victoria); two sisters: Mary Ann Nance and Joyce Singleton; fifteen grandchildren: Kristen Turner (Chad), Natalie Elder (Sam), Mark Chandler (Logan), Ben Farnsworth (Karen), Elizabeth Strain (Bryan), Robert Farnsworth, Jack Farnsworth, Beth Anne Farmer (Andrew), Rebecca Byrd (Lee Andes, fiance), Christopher Byrd, Claire Byrd, Edward Chandler, Jr., Patrick Chandler, Eliot Chandler, and Lauren Chandler ; and fifteen great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a sister, Jane Boulware. The funeral service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2703 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605 on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
