Colonel George P. Shamer II, USAF (Retired), 69, of Woodbridge, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his home on January 18, 2017, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
George was born in Bellflower, California on July 8, 1947, to Captain Preston Shamer and his wife, Elizabeth. He received his commission through ROTC at The Citadel, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and he later earned a Master of Arts in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado.
George had a long and distinguished career in the United States Air Force as a Nuclear and Missile Operations Officer with assignments throughout the United States culminating in retirement from the Pentagon. His many military decorations include: the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Combat Readiness Medal, and the National Defense Medal. In his post-Air Force career, George was a Senior Analyst at Technology Research Corporation and a real estate agent with Long & Foster.
Retirement allowed time for giving back to the community as well as building a closer relationship with God. He served by appointment on the boards of the Prince William Industrial Development Authority, the Prince William County Housing Advisory Board and the Flory Small Business Center. In addition, he was a very active member of Lake Ridge Rotary; the Prince William Chamber of Commerce; the Prince William Committee of 100; the Prince William Republican Committee; the Citadel Club of Washington, DC; Stanley Forest HOA; and All Saints Church, Woodbridge.
He is survived by his wife, Sheryl, and her children, Daniel Wilshere (Carolina) of California, Ruth Vafek (Oskar) of Florida; Joshua Wilshere of Virginia, and Matthew Wilshere (Molly) of Virginia; his son John Shamer (Michelle) of North Carolina; his sisters Elizabeth Shamer (Craig Wiggins) of Rhode Island and Laura Keogh (Paul) of Australia; five grandchildren; and his first wife, Christina Shamer of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents Preston and Elizabeth Shamer, and his brother Edward.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 28, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Church, 14851 Gideon Drive, Woodbridge, Virginia. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be announced.
