Margaret Shannon Broughton Tenney, of Charleston, SC and Keene Valley, NY, passed away peacefully in the company of family on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at St. Michael’s Church, 71 Broad Street, at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. Burial will be private. Margaret was born Feb. 14, 1933 in Bryn Mawr, PA, daughter of Thomas Robert Shannon Broughton and Annie Leigh Camm Hobson Broughton. She was a graduate of The Baldwin School (1951) and Mount Holyoke College (1955), and earned the MAT Degree from The Citadel (1988). She taught History at Ashley Hall in Charleston, 1955-1957 and 1972-2000. She coached the school’s Swan Club synchronized swimming team in the 1950s, and later taught other subjects including Art History and Economics. She retired from full-time teaching in 1998, taught part-time until 2000, and served as School Historian and Archivist from 2000-2004. On June 8, 1957, she married Thomas Asa Tenney; his mother was Ashley Hall’s Assistant Headmistress, and his aunt, co-founder of Charleston Day School. The couple lived in New York City and Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, moving to Moorestown, NJ in 1960; Margaret taught at The Chapin School in New York 1957- 1959, and served as Lower School Librarian at Moorestown Friends School 1968-1970. The family, now with three sons, returned to Charleston in 1970. Margaret soon returned to Ashley Hall; her husband taught English and pursued scholarly work at The College of Charleston and at The Citadel. The family joined St. Michael’s Church, where she remained an active member throughout her life, singing with the choir, and participating in church groups. From the age of 12 and throughout her life, she and her family spent time during summers in Keene Valley, NY, enjoying the Adirondack mountain scenery, and maintaining lifelong friendships. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Thomas Alan Broughton. She is survived by her three sons: Asa Robert Tenney, Charles Reid Tenney, and William Shannon Tenney: her grandson, Guillermo Reid Tenney; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
