Arthur Welling Doughty III, age 86, of Statesboro, Ga., passed away peacefully Monday, January 2, 2017, at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice, with his loving wife by his side.
Arthur was born on Parris Island, S.C., to the late Arthur Welling Doughty Jr. and Nina Stacy Beckett Doughty, and as a child, lived in many places both inside and outside the United States, traveling with his father, who was in the U.S. Navy. Arthur graduated from The Citadel, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.
After graduation, Arthur married Edna Mae Denmark and they began their lives together in Savannah, where they lived until moving to Statesboro two years ago. While in Savannah, Arthur was a member of the Wilmington Island United Methodist Church and served as a Boy Scout leader for 26 years. He worked as a structural engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers for many years before becoming the owner of his own engineering firm. He then became a partner with Whalley and Associates for many years and after that business venture, he founded Software South, Inc., where he worked until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, Arthur was preceded in death by three sisters, Joyce Swallow, Louise Mathieson and Margaret Doughty.
Mr. Doughty is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edna Mae Denmark Doughty of Statesboro; sons, Alan Doughty, and his wife, Shigeko, of San Diego, Calif.; and Todd Doughty, and his wife, Debbie, of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.; daughter, Kimberly Doughty Wiggins, and her husband, Donald, of Lugoff, S.C.; sisters, Mary Alice Martin, and her husband, Don, of Waycross; and Lillian Masschelin of Charleston, S.C.; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017, at Statesboro First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Cason and the Rev. Terry DeLoach officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will be held in the gathering area at the church from 1 p.m. until the service time.
Burial will follow in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Members of the Dan Williams Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
