Joseph H. Hughes, Jr., of Winter Springs, Fla., died Dec. 19, 2016. His wish has now come true. He is again with his beloved wife, Dolores. He passed away peacefully on Monday, December 19 in his home in Winter Springs where he and Dolores resided for many happy years. Joe was born December 25th, 1917, in Monticello, Florida. He earned a B.S. degree at the Citadel in 1939. While at the Citadel he lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track. He served as an infantry officer in combat in World War II in Europe, Korea and Japan. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He also earned degrees from basic and advanced infantry schools at Ft. Benning, GA; command general staff school in Ft. Leavenworth, KS; warfare school in Ft. Riley KS; and a graduate degree in insurance property casualty, life and health at the University of Tampa. He owned his own business taking school pictures in Florida for 30 years, plus also handling student accident insurance for 40 years. Joe loved sports. He hunted wildlife and fished for game fish in many areas of the world. He was also a contributing photographer for Field & Stream Magazine. He was a good enough golfer to score in the 60s, thanks to the help of Sam Snead when in Winter Haven, Fl. Joe was active for a time in the television ministry at Calvary Assembly of God in in Winter Park during which time he met Pat Robertson and was invited to go with Pat to Israel in 1975. Joe is survived 3 children, 4 stepchildren, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.In lieu of flowers, please donate to Edgewood Children’s Ranch in Orlando, Florida.
