Lt. Col. Sam Payne, USAF (Ret.), 88, of Mt. Pleasant, husband of Carolyn Hamilton Payne, died November 20, 2016. His Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd., at 11:00 a.m. Sam was born August 8, 1928 in Macon, GA to John David Payne and Mettie Guest Payne. Sam was a graduate of Chicora High School and the Class of 1950 at The Citadel. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years, including a tour in Vietnam. Sam was a 32nd Degree Mason, Etiwan Lodge #95, and a member of Scottish Rite. In addition to his wife, Carolyn, he is survived by two sons, Sam Payne, Jr. (Eliza) of San Angelo, TX and David Andrew Payne of Salt Lake City, UT; one daughter, Pam Kirk of Fairfax, VA; two step-sons, Douglas Hamilton (Debbie) and Rhett Hamilton; three grandchildren, Conchita Payne Toshok (Chris) of San Francisco, CA, and Kenneth and Amy Kirk of Fairfax, VA; two great-grandchildren, Josephine and Sylvie; and one brother, Paul Payne (Bertha) of Hanahan, SC. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joel D. Payne; and three sisters, Mary Payne Rourk, Marjorie Payne Powell, and Augusta Payne Reynolds. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital , 950 W.
