Lt. Col. Robert H. Thrasher, Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.)., of Columbia, and formerly of Charleston, SC, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at the age of 52. Robert was born in Columbus, GA, to Caroline (Irvine) and Col. Robert H. Thrasher Sr., U.S. Army (Ret). He graduated from The Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, in 1986. Upon graduation, he received his commission as a quartermaster officer and reported to his initial assignment as a platoon leader with the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, NC. Robert went on to have a distinguished and honorable military career including the following medals, badges and campaign ribbons: the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Parachutist Badge, and the Air Assault Badge. After 26 years of service, he retired as a lieutenant colonel in May 2012. He is survived by his three children, Ashlen Thrasher, Megan Thrasher and Kristan Thrasher, and their mother, Kristan Harden Thrasher; his granddaughter, Opal Caroline Gattis; his parents, Gary and Caroline Irvine and Col. Robert H. Thrasher Sr. (Ret.); his half brother, Eric Thrasher; and his stepbrother, Jim and Michael Crippen. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Gary Irvine Jr. Lt. Col. Robert H. Thrasher Jr. (Ret.) will be remembered as a loving father, son, brother, and friend and for his passionate and dutiful service to the United States. A public memorial will be held at Stuhr’s Funeral Home in Mt.
