William (Bill) Curtis Stump, Sr., 71, of Sylva, NC, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, August 11, 2016. Born in Monroe, LA, Bill was the son of the late Charles William Stump, Sr. and Barbara Annie (Ogburn) Stump.
A proud 1966 graduate of The Citadel, Band Company, in Charleston, SC, Bill chose to live in the place he loved most, the Smoky Mountains and Sylva, NC. For 30 years, Bill worked at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC during which time he received his Masters degree from WCU and met and married the love of his life, Frances Marie Beasley. Married for 38 years they raised three wonder children. After retiring from WCU, Bill started a second career as a real estate broker.
He and Frances traveled to many far flung places and had a passion for golf. He was a devoted member of the Jackson County Golf Club and the East Sylva Baptist Church choir.
In addition to his loving wife, Frances, Bill is survived by his son William Curtis (Curt) Stump, Jr. (Caroline Brown) of Mendocino County, California; his two daughters, Jill Arlt (Brian) of Bainbridge Island, Washington; and Jennifer Richardson (Joseph) of Charleston, South Carolina; and his three grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Izzy, and Charlie Arlt, also of Bainbridge Island, WA.
Bill’s surviving siblings are Charles (Chuck) William Stump, III, (Carole) of Ruskin, FL; Barbara Anne (Stump) Miller (Mark) of Olympia, WA; David Ogburn Stump (Lynn) of Maitland, FL.
He is survived by his nephew, Bryan Ahrenbeck Stump; his niece, Leigh Anne Stump; his brother-in-law, James Harold Beasley, sister-in-law Carolyn Beasley, and nephew Brandon Beasley.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 16, at East Sylva Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Dean and Reed Benson officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, August 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Appalachian Funeral home, 165 Skyland Drive, Sylva.
