Larry Edward Spell, 79, of Columbus, Ga., died peacefully at home on October 28, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertie Edward Spell and Gladys Bennett Spell. A Celebration of Life for Larry will be held at Wynnton Methodist Church, 2412 Wynnton Road, Columbus, Georgia 31906 on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 1:00 pm.
Born February 12, 1944, in Walterboro, SC, Larry grew up in Savannah, GA. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1962 and then completed his education at The Citadel, graduating in 1966. After proudly serving 2 years in the United States Army, he began his career in Human Resources in the textile industry in North Carolina. He worked in several cities in North Carolina over 30 years before being transferred to Columbus in 2000. He completed his career with Swift-Gayley Textiles as Vice President of Human Resources.
Larry loved spending time with family and being part of his son’s and grandchildren’s activities when possible. He enjoyed woodworking and photography which led to both sons excelling in each. His greatest love during retirement was playing golf and heading up the “Spell Group” at Maple Ridge, and recording a spectacular 6 Hole-in-One’s. He was a member of Wynnton Methodist Church and didn’t let golf interfere with his time in church on Sundays.
Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anne Meares Spell; sons Gregory Steven Spell (wife Elizabeth) of Waleska, GA and Michael Edward Spell (wife Jennefer) of Boone, NC; six grandchildren, Steven Spell, Miles Spell, Hattie Spell, Samantha Dees (husband Hunter), Ellie Hammonds (husband Nick), Kate Johnson and 2 great-grandchildren Camdyn and Olivia Dees.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made in honor of Larry to Wynnton Methodist Church-Backpacks of Grace, P.O. Box 5469, Columbus, GA 31906 or to Columbus Hospice, 7020 Moon Rd, Columbus, GA 31909.
The family wishes to thank the Wynnton Methodist Church Family, Columbus Hospice, and the many friends for the support and care they provided Larry.
