Owen Gladstone Shell, Jr. (Bob), born in Greenville, SC on June 19,1936, to Owen Gladstone Shell and Katherine Walker Shell passed away December 2, 2023, in Nashville, TN at the age of 87 surrounded by loved ones. Bob was dedicated to his family, his faith, his friends, and his community, giving generously to each. Bob graduated from Greenville High School, in Greenville, SC (1965). He attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC, later receiving a BS in Finance from the University of South Carolina (1969); he received a Postgraduate Degree from The Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers (1971), and an Advanced Management Degree from Harvard University (1979). Bob began his banking career at the Citizens & Southern National Bank of SC, serving as Executive Vice President (1968-1979), later moving to Nashville, TN to join First American Bank of TN as President, Chairman and CEO and as Director and Vice Chairman of the Board of First American Corporation (1979 -1986); Bob served as President and CEO of NationsBank of TN (formerly Sovran Bank) before taking on the responsibility of Chairman, President and CEO of Commerce Union Bank of TN, finally retiring from his role as President of Bank of America Global Wealth and Asset Management (1997-2002). In addition, Bob also served on the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and Nashville, the Board of Directors of Central Parking (Nashville, TN), the Board of Directors of The Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of LifePoint Hospitals. Bob found great purpose and joy in serving his community in a variety of roles including: membership in Leadership Nashville, later serving as President of the Board of Directors for 4 years; Chairman of the Board of the TN Performing Arts Center; a Board member of the TN Boy Scouts and Second Harvest; President Elect of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce (1994-1995); a member of the United Way of TN, the Metropolitan Nashville Public Education Foundation, and the Nashville Partnership 2000 Executive Committee. In 1992 Bob received the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award and in 1995 he was awarded the Easter Seal Society Nashvillian of the Year Award. Bob was also a committed member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he was able to share and practice his deep faith and love of God. As a father and friend, he will always be best remembered for his steadfast love, support, guidance, and unwavering commitment to God and his family, as well as his deep compassion for mankind and wonderful sense of humor. Bob is predeceased by his wife Mary Carroll Shell of Gaffney, SC and Mary Ruth Shell of Columbia, SC as well as his beloved dogs Buddy and Bailey. He is survived by his children Katherine Sloan Shell, Mary Carroll (Callie) Shell (Vincent Musi), Robert “Bob” Owen Shell (Tara), and James Walker Shell (Joy) and grandchildren, Madeline Shell, Hunter Musi, Lauren Shell, Jordan Shell, and Bobby Shell. A private burial service will be held a Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be held at 2:00pm followed by a service at 4:00pm on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3900 West End Avenue, Nashville, TN.
