Janet Hume Cox, 66, of Cross, South Carolina, passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at a local hospital. Formerly of Lexington, Kentucky, she is survived by her mother, Irene Hume Niffenegger, of Lexington. Janet was preceded in death by her father, Otis Clay Hume, and her sister, Joie Hume.
For 25 years, Janet worked alongside her father in the family business, Convenient Food Mart, located in Paris, Kentucky. After receiving a bachelor of science degree from Eastern Kentucky University and a master’s degree in education from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, she worked as a crisis counselor, court advocate, case manager, teacher, and trainer in community service. Janet wrote and published In Service to Your Community: A Field Survival Guide for Community-Based Services Professionals.
Janet found great pleasure in gardening, and was very successful with growing orchids. She loved listening to music and spending time with friends and her beloved three cats.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM at the Lafayette, Lexington, Kentucky, by Dr. Terry Martin, according to Dial-Murray Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
