James Frederick Stewart, 93, of Hilton Head, SC died Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at his home, in the arms of his wife Eleanor and all of their children. Jim was born in Circleville, OH, but Charleston, SC was always his home.
Jim was a 1947 graduate of St. Andrews High School. He then joined the Air Force where he served during the Korean War and the Berlin Air Lift. After completing his military service, he returned home to Charleston and married Eleanor Hunter. Jim then went on to receive his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from The Citadel in 1956.
After college, Jim worked briefly for the Atomic Energy Commission in Aiken, SC before returning home to Charleston to work for Westvaco, which began a life-long career in the paper industry. His career took him and his family from Charleston to Virginia, to Georgia, to Kentucky, to Arizona, to Florida and again to Georgia. In 1997, he returned home to the Low Country to retire in Hilton Head and for many years summered in the North Carolina mountains.
Jim is survived by his wife of 70 years, Eleanor, and children Nicki Slusser (Tim) also of Hilton Head, James Jr. (Dake Gonzalez) of New York City, Melonie Murphy (Jeff) of Amelia Island, FL and Alison Stewart (John Samora) of Lakeside, AZ. He was an incredibly proud grandfather, who enjoyed sharing in the successes of Hunter (Kellie), Kyle and Blake (Jessica) Murphy and Stewart and Shelby Teel. He was blessed with six great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews that he dearly loved.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 26th at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at The Church of the Cross, 110 Calhoun Street in Bluffton, SC. Friends and family are invited to attend the service as well as a gathering immediately following at the Moss Creek Bostwick Pavilion located at 104 Cedar Lane, Hilton Head.
