William Lee Gibbs, Jr., age 63, of York, died peacefully at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy, on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Born in York on August 10, 1959, he was the son of the late William Lee Gibbs, Sr., and the late Roberta Star (Hunter) Gibbs.
Bill, as he was called by family and friends, was a 1977 graduate of William Penn High School and went on to graduate from The Citadel with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Following his time at The Citadel, he joined the US Army, where he rose to the rank of Major and served his country all over the world and was a Veteran of the Gulf War.
Bill was a huge Raiders fan and enjoyed watching the Nittany Lions. He also enjoyed the arts, theater, country music and classic 80’s music. He loved to watch 007 (his inspiration for joining the military) and The Duke, John Wayne. Bill’s main love in life was making his children happy. He will always be remembered by those who knew him for his rough exterior, kind heart, and many sayings like “It is better to do the harder right, than the easier wrong”.
He is survived by his children Courtney K. Gibbs Cordova, and her husband Luis of Harrisburg, Katherine E. Gibbs of York, and William Lee Gibbs, III of York, his grandchildren Caelan and Liam Cordova, and his brothers John and Kenton Gibbs of York.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 East Market Street, York. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00am.
