D. Fynn DeHay, CGC ’77

David Fynn DeHay, 77, husband of Brenda Whitson DeHay, of West Union, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2023, at his home.
A native of Charleston, SC, Fynn was the son of the late Henry David and Mildred Gunnells DeHay.
Fynn graduated from Garrett High School. He received his BS from Newberry College in 1967 in accounting. Fynn was a US Air Force Vietnam Veteran He earned his MBA from The Citadel in 1971 thanks to the GI bill. Fynn spent most of his career at Alumax, which later became Alcoa, starting in 1979 until his retirement in 2001. He retired as the administrative manager. Fynn was of the Presbyterian faith, he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher throughout his life. He was a member of Seneca Presbyterian Church. In addition to his church service, he served as a member of several organizations, including: State Chamber of Commerce, Berkley County Chamber of Commerce (President), United Way, Rotary Club, and Elk’s Club.
Fynn enjoyed spending time with close friends, cooking, playing cards, cozy British mysteries, and traveling with his family. Fynn was a man of strong faith, with an incredibly sharp intellect, particularly for all things mathematical, and he was the absolute best person to help others in times of crisis. Though a quiet man by nature, if you paid attention, you would catch his mischievous comments and jokes.
Fynn adored sports of every description. He played basketball, football, and baseball in his youth. He continued to play softball and golf for many years He enjoyed coaching basketball. But the loves of his later life were watching Clemson softball and football. Though his later years had many changes and many challenges due to his illnesses, he remained a devoted husband, loving father, and avid sports fan.
He will be missed and remembered fondly by many people who knew and loved him. But most of all he will be remembered for how much he loved and was loved by Brenda and Brynn.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, Fynn is survived by his daughter: Brynn Nicole DeHay of Irmo, SC; brother: Verlie D. DeHay; and sister: Debra DeHay Phillips (Michael); 4 nieces and nephews; 5 great-nieces and nephews; and his grandpuppy: Gabe.
