Services for Dr. James H. Goethe, 71, of Vance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Avenger Funeral Home of Holly Hill, with burial in George’s Creek Baptist Church cemetery of Govan. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Dr. Goethe died Oct. 18, 1991.
Born in Varnville, he was a son of the late James and Lulu Detweiler Goethe. A graduate of The Citadel and the Medical College of Virginia, he was a retired dentist from St. George. A retired lieutenant colonel from the Army Reserve, he was a World War II army veteran with the 82nd Airborne division and received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Netherlands Orange Lanyard. A former president of St. George Businessmen’s Club, he was a member of Bethlehem Southern Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Lancaster Goethe of Vance; a daughter, Priscilla Elledge of St. George; a son, John Goethe of Moncks Corner; a sister, Louise Crews of Hampton; and a brother, Peter Goethe of Ocala, Fla.
